B. Capacity Building

UDGAM frequently organizes training programs for capacity building and skill up-gradation of the villagers. Trainings that have been imparted in the past include



1. Training on White Grub Management:

A number of village level trainings were conducted on white grub management. Dr S. N. Sushil (Senior Scientist, Entomology, VPKAS, Almora) was the main trainer. The module covered issues like life cycle, nature of damage and control measures of white grub (larva of a pest). Discussions during the training brought to light of the villagers that white grub is the most devastating pest of monsoon crops in hilly areas and its losses varies from 10-90 % and sometimes leads to total crop failure. Valuable suggestions like not using raw cow dung in their fields and use of light trap for controlling the adult beetles of white grubs were well received by the villagers.

2. Training on Oil Seeds and Pulses :
 

A trainings on oil seeds and pulses cultivation and marketing was organized by UDGAM. Dr B. D. Singh (KVK, Almora) was the main trainer. The module covered issues like cultivation practices of mustard, toria, lentil, urd, moong, bean, gram etc. The emphasis of the training was on promotion of cultivation by showcasing profits associated with it.
3. Training on Insect-Pest Management of Crops:
 

Trainings on insect-pest management of winter crops were organized by UDGAM. Dr. S. N. Sushil (Senior Scientist, Entomology, VPKAS, Almora) and Dr K. S. Hudda(Senior Scientist, Pathology, VPKAS, Almora) were the key faculty for this. Farmers were made aware of the various diseases and insect/pests found in winter crops. Training farmers on various management practices of diseases and insect pests of different crops including vegetables and fruits was the area of focus.
4. Training on Vegetable Cultivation:
 

Training on vegetable cultivation was organized in selected villages of district Almora of Uttarakhand with the help of Dr B. D. Singh (Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chaubatiya). Knowledge on cultivation practices of various vegetables like cabbage, potato, onion, tomato and cucurbitaceous crops was passed on. Villagers were also made aware of various cultural and mechanical practices being used for increasing yield of vegetable crops. Emphasis was laid on use of high yielding varieties of vegetable so that farmers can earn good amount of money per unit area
5. Training on Fruit Cultivation:


Training on fruit cultivation was organized in village Jyoli and Pakhura of district Almora with the help of department of horticulture, Almora. Dr Rameshwar Singh was the main trainer for these trainings. The module covered topics like cultivation practices, varieties, insect-pests management of various fruit crops. The main crops covered under these trainings were almond, peach, apricot, apple, citrus, guava and pomegranate
